Durham Cathedral is a Norman building constructed between 1093 and 1133 in the Romanesque style. It was founded as a monastic cathedral built to house the shrine of St Cuthbert. The Cathedral has been in continuous use since its original construction 900 years ago. It remains a place of worship and pilgrimage, and is also an important visitor attraction. It holds over 1700 services a year, and costs £60,000 per week (that’s about £6 per minute!) to maintain. The Cathedral offers a variety of spaces that can be hired for various events including concerts, conferences, wedding ceremonies and wedding receptions and celebrations alike. With space to host over 600 delegates this is a truly iconic venue in which to host your next event. Championing local produce the Undercroft Restaurant has received a Taste Durham award in recognition of its support of local producers and the team are always on hand to discuss your plans. If you’re looking to put a spring in the step of your delegates then private cathedral tours or guided walks of the local woodland and riverbank can always be incorporated into your day. Or why not challenge them to head up the cathedral tower to take in the stunning views – they may even spot the Angel of the North on a clear day.

Welcome to St Chad's College Founded in 1904, St Chad's College is one of the oldest Colleges in the University of Durham. St Chad's is remarkably situated at the very heart of medieval Durham, thirty metres from the magnificent Cathedral, not far from Durham Castle, and just a stone's throw from Durham's marketplace and historic streets. Most of the College buildings, which line North Bailey, were formerly Georgian town houses, though the interiors have changed over the years. Beyond the back gardens, the land falls away into the wooded gorge of the River Wear which girds the high peninsula, once the citadel of the Prince Bishops and a symbol of Norman power. If you are organising a conference or group trip, planning a meeting or holding a wedding reception, St Chad's College could be the venue for you. We also offer Bed & Breakfast accommodation to guests visiting the North East. The College also has many years' experience of planning and delivering pilgrimages and retreats to the many holy sites of Celtic North East England. CONFERENCES The Durham Academic Conference Service at St Chad's College St Chad's College pioneered the complete turn-key Durham Academic Conference Service in 2003 and since then have provided a complete conference service for many University departments. We are able to offer a complete service from the initial desire to hold a conference through to saying farewell to delegates. All scheduling, booking, reservations, catering, printing, web sites, delegate queries etc are handled by the College (along with anything else you can think of), leaving the academic members of the department free to enjoy the conference. Five reasons why you should choose St Chad's College... Value for money: Our rates are very competitive and will suit almost any budget. Attentive staff: We pride ourselves on having wonderful staff. Help in planning your conference: just contact the Commercial Director Quality meals: choose from informal buffets to elegant dining Seminar and lecture rooms: you can have rooms either in the College or in university buildings Accommodation: in a central and intimate location, with friendly, personal service Tours: we can arrange for your group to have tours of attractions close-by Our modest size and dedicated staff can guarantee that your conference will run smoothly. Groups of 25 to 150 delegates can meet both for day or residential conferences. Everyone can be accommodated on one site in our historic buildings and the whole group can dine together in our elegant dining hall. Larger groups can be accommodated with help from adjacent Colleges, all within a minute's walk of our main building. Oldfields the Restaurant

    Oldfields the Restaurant

Oldfields Restaurant, 9 Osborne Road, Jesmond, Newcastle, NE2 2AE
    • Unusual

Oldfields the Restaurant in Jesmond, Newcastle opened to the public on Friday 14th November 2003. It appears that the older part of this building was built as a telephone exchange for Jesmond in 1905. Formerly the Scout headquarters, the site has undergone extensive work to produce the impressive environment that we have today. Initially many local residents were understandably worried about our plans and were concerned that we were seeking permission for a bar similar to many others in the area. The images below shows how we envisaged the restaurant would look, and how it actually looked on opening: We believe that we've delivered what we promised! Similarly to Durham, the Jesmond restaurant is split between informal and slightly more formal dining. This provides a unique dining experience for residents of Jesmond, Gosforth and around. To take a closer look around either of the Oldfields restaurants check out our restaurant tour page.
